Toxic Asbestos - Have You Been Exposed?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Asbestos is a very abundant and very dangerous material. Inhalation of microscopic airborne asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Many people have been exposed to asbestos, either in the workplace or in their homes, without their knowledge. This article will help you understand the sources of asbestos exposure, and learn whether you may have been a victim of corporate negligence. If you have developed mesothelioma, asbestosis, or lung cancer, and you believe that asbestos was involved, you may have a legal claim. The risk of toxic exposure is greatest for people who have worked in industries and workplaces in which asbestos products were used. These include:

asbestos mining and milling
manufacture of asbestos tiles
manufacture of asbestos fabrics
shipbuilding trades
insulation work in construction
electricians
plasterers
pipe fitters
railroad workers
building demolition
drywall installation
drywall removal
other asbestos removal
firefighting
asbestos tile setters
boiler workers
aluminum plant workers
manufacture of brake linings
Shipbuilding and ship repair involves many materials that contain asbestos, and in shipyards workers often worked in small, poorly ventilated spaces with materials that released large quantities of asbestos fibers into the air. In Southern California, the Long Beach Shipyard (also called the US Naval Dry Docks and the Terminal Island Naval Shipyard), the San Diego Naval Shipyard, and NASSCO have employed thousands of workers in the shipbuilding trades, including pipe fitters, boilermakers, electricians, welders, machinists, filers, polishers, sanders, buffers, heat treaters, maintenance workers, engineers, draftsmen, and others.

People who have worked in shipbuilding in any capacity, even for a matter of weeks or months, at any time in their lives, are at increased risk for developing mesothelioma. They should always tell their healthcare providers about their exposure.

Many people live in homes built before 1990, in which asbestos was widely used in construction, or they work or go to school in buildings where asbestos products were used. As long as the asbestos-containing materials such as asphalt tile and roofing materials are not sanded, scraped, filed, cut, or otherwise disturbed or removed, the asbestos fibers are less likely to escape into air and the inhalation hazard is low.

If a person lives or works in a structure in which one or more of these or other asbestos-containing products have been removed or disturbed, the risk of asbestos exposure rises. Removal of products that contain to asbestos should be done only by workers trained in asbestos removal.

If you have received a diagnosis of mesothelioma, and you believe that your mesothelioma developed as a result of workplace exposure to asbestos, you may have a legal claim against the corporation that permitted the exposure, or the manufacturer of the asbestos product.

A Glimpse at a Few Alternative Procedures For Asbestos-Related Mesothelioma

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Although mesothelioma can be caused by other things - like radiation exposure, and is some cases, genetics - most of it is related to asbestos exposure. Nonetheless, it can't be denied that to have it, means a person will be facing a very aggressive enemy - whether it's attacked the lining of the lungs, the abdominal cavity, or the mesothelial tissue of some other body organ.

Many times, the cancer isn't even caught until it's already spread, and by then, patients aren't able to handle the rigorous treatments normally used to fight the disease - as their bodies are in a more weakened state than they would normally be from other types of cancer. Plus, some cancer patients simply don't believe in adding man-made chemicals to their systems - no matter what the circumstances. This is where many of them have found help in alternative treatments, to alleviate their symptoms, and in some cases, even cure them of their diseases. Here is a short rundown of some treatments being used today:

Reiki - This is an ancient practice of massage, used to help restore balance to the body by unblocking the energy, and allowing it to flow freely once more. A Reiki "master" works on the sick person by placing his hands over the body - almost, but not quite, touching the skin. He then moves down the whole body, attempting to impart his healing energy to the patient - paying special attention to the diseased areas. Some patients have benefited from Reiki sessions, and have reported decreased pain, easier breathing, an increased feeling relaxation - and the ability to sleep through the night once more.

Vitamin C therapy - Researchers have found that certain levels of pharmaceutical grade vitamin C - aka ascorbic acid - actually stops the growth of tumors. And in some cases, it's even vanquished the deadly cancer cells - thereby curing the person of his illness. However, before using this method, check with your doctor first, as this treatment has been known to interfere with the effectiveness of treatments like chemotherapy - especially if both methods are used at the same time.

Essiac tea - This is a tea made from burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm bark, and Turkish rhubarb - and it can be purchased either at a local health food store or online. It's available either in blended form, or each herb can be purchased separately, so it can be brewed from scratch.

Once it's made, it's taken three times a day, with the prescribed dose being three ounces per dose. And, it needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Some former cancer patients - including a few that have battled this type of cancer- have reported they've been cured by taking the prescribed dosages in conjunction with adhering to a strict diet.

There are many alternative treatments that are reported to work in alleviating the symptoms of - and once in a while even curing - mesothelioma. And, you can find all of them by searching the internet yourself. However, it's important to remember to always check with your doctor first, before trying any alternative treatment on your own - as cancer is nothing to fool around with.

Mesothelioma Survival - What Are the Chances?

Every year, about 3000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States alone. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is an aggressive and usually fatal type of cancer that results from asbestos exposure. This disease occurs when microscopic asbestos fibers are inhaled and get lodged into the linings of the lungs.

What are the chances for mesothelioma survival once a victim gets diagnosed? Sadly, not many victims of mesothelioma survive more than five years after the diagnosis has been made. Mesothelioma survival chances are increased if the disease is caught early. However, this kind of cancer is difficult to detect in its early stages. Once it is detected and diagnosed, it is oftentimes in its advanced stage and too late for a definitive cure. According to reliable sources, less than 10% of mesothelioma sufferers get the chance to survive more than 5 years, while about 40% of sufferers survive more than a year after diagnosis.

As in all forms of cancer, mesothelioma survival rates depend on various factors. These include:

* The current stage of the cancer. The stages of mesothelioma range from Stage One, which primarily means that the tumor is localized in the chest lining, to Stage Four, meaning that the tumor has spread to other vital organs.

* The histology (cell structure and type) of the cancer. Mesothelioma cancer can come as epithelial, which has better prognosis, sarcomatoid, biphasic or desmoplastic.

* The overall health condition and age of the sufferer. The malignant forms of mesothelioma are oftentimes diagnosed in sufferers above the age of 55. Generally, the older the victim is, or the more chronic illnesses associated with the disease, the less chance there is for mesothelioma survival.

* The size and location of the tumor (whether the tumor is operable or not.)

* The extent of the symptoms, such as whether fluid buildup has been observed in the lungs or abdomen.

Mesothelioma is a serious condition which demands immediate medical attention. Although there is no proven cure for mesothelioma, various treatment options are available to prevent the disease from spreading and also to reduce pain and suffering for the victim.

These treatment options may increase the chances for mesothelioma survival. According to various studies, victims administered with chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, or a combination of any two or three, have a survival rate of at least 18 months after undertaking the procedures.

Today, many experimental treatments are being evaluated throughout the world in controlled clinical trials. These include Photodynamic Therapy, Immunotherapy, Heat Therapy and Gene Therapy.

The Facts About Lung Cancer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Lung cancer affects millions of people every year. Despite its this, many remain unaware of some of the basic facts about this deadly disease.

In the United States, more than 200,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year, with most of those diagnosed, about 116,000, being men. In that same study, a staggering fact is that it will kill more than 160,000 people, which is higher than the number of deaths for breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined. Lung cancer deaths account for almost 30 percent of all cancer-related deaths each year, making it the most common cause of cancer-related death in both males and females.

But mortality rates, at least in men, have taken a downward turn. Peeking around 1993, mortality rates for men have fallen more recently, even while staying relatively stable for women. Black men still retain the highest mortality rate of any group however, followed by white men.

Smoking is the key risk associated with lung diseases. Smokers, and even those who inhale smoke second-hand, are at much higher risk for developing cancer than non-smokers. But other factors also come into play. Asbestos, a fibrous material small enough to become airborne and be inhaled into the lungs, is linked to a specific type of cancer called mesothelioma. Radon and general air pollution also contribute to a higher risk of cancer.

Crucial to preventing lung cancer is avoiding these potentially harmful chemicals and materials. Smokers who quit smoking, even after continuing the habit for years, can help reduce their risk. Of course, avoiding smoking altogether is the most effective way of preventing cancer. Having ever smoked does increase risk, as lungs that have been damaged by smoking never go back to normal, and those who have smoked or still do smoke make up the majority of cancer cases.

Other harmful substances, like radon and asbestos, should be avoided as well. If inhaled, these can damage the lungs and cause lung cancer. Asbestos in particular has become a health concern since the 1970s. Many of those who used to work with the material, particularly in construction-related jobs, inhaled it without realizing the danger and are now seeing that exposure manifest as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

There are active ways to reduce risk as well. Evidence has shown that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may deter lung cancer. And, as cancer tends to develop in scarred areas of the lungs, managing other lung diseases like tuberculosis can also aid in preventing cancer.

Symptoms target the lungs and airways, and may include coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath or wheezing, and bronchitis. Other markers of cancer are weight loss, fatigue, loss of appetite, and pneumonia.

The only cure for lung cancer is surgery and that only in the earliest stages of the disease. But research and funding is being directed toward searching for ways to combat the disease. However, the amount of funding directed toward lung cancer remains low compared to the number of deaths experienced each year. Roughly $1,500 goes toward cancer research per patient death, compared to almost $5,000 for colorectal cancer, nearly $14,000 for breast cancer and about $11,000 for prostate cancer. This has made it more difficult for researchers to study lung cancer. But organizations like the Lung Cancer Alliance and the National Lung Cancer Partnership are encouraging research and study of the disease in the hope of speeding the road to a cure.

Mesothelioma Prognosis

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which is relatively rare and typically affects approximately one in one million people. The usual cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos although it can be caused by exposure to other chemicals as well.

The medical word "prognosis" describes the likely outcome of a particular illness. The description can be fairly accurate when applied statistically to large numbers of people, but can never be all that certain when applied to an individual patient, so a prognosis for an individual patient is often given in terms of percentage likelihoods, as nothing is ever certain.

Studies have shown that most doctors are likely to be optimistic when delivering a prognosis to a patient.

A prognosis for a patient suffering from mesothelioma depends on a number of factors. The disease is often very difficult to diagnose at all until the late stages, because all the symptoms can also be indications of other diseases, and because many of the symptoms don't necessarily appear until decades after the asbestos exposure.

Some screening methods can help to determine if a patient is likely to develop mesothelioma later, but these are far from precise much of the time. While smoking on its own has not been shown to cause mesothelioma, it can increase the likelihood of developing the disease.

Treatment of mesothelioma includes radiation, surgery, immunology and chemotherapy, often used in combination. For example, a patient might first have surgery to remove most of the tumor, then chemotherapy and radiation targeted to what is left.

A mesothelioma prognosis can be helpful in determining which treatments to use, and of course can be used in litigation to help obtain compensation, which can be considerable (sometimes more than tens of millions of dollars).

How to Cope With Mesothelioma

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Living with cancer is not easy obviously. And living with a dreaded cancer like mesothelioma is definitely worse. But with the increasing incidence of mesothelioma across the globe, many people are struggling to catch hold of their life and improve the quality of life. We must live every moment in our life to the fullest; this is the truest thing in world for mesothelioma patients. They are desperate to hold on and live an extra innings of life that they love so very much. But for many patients, destiny has some other plans. The prognosis for this cancer is pretty bad for most patients who are diagnosed with it late due to symptom similarity to other diseases like pneumonia. But certainly hope is enhanced these days with new treatment options.

With apt hospital facility and treatment options, the mesothelioma cancer patients improve their quality of life these days but they need to improve on many fronts of life like follows:

oCoping with treatments: the panic of mesothelioma is so very severe in many patients that those with good prognosis also fail to elicit desired compliance to the treatment. This must not happen. With firm familial support and good rapport with the doctor, it is possible to enhance the compliance of the patient. Psychotherapy or psychological counseling also plays an important role in this and many patients respond better to the treatments with good mind set up or positive mental outlook.

oCoping with nutrition: Certainly with extensive treatment options like chemotherapy and radiation, appetite of these patients reduce. But a good dietician and expert can help these patients to improve their nutrition. Nutritious and healthy food choices are must even for those who have been treated with surgery to remove the portions of cancer. Light breakfasts and light meal options with six-a-day smaller meals help these patients conquer the deficiencies well.

oCoping with body fitness: after successful treatment executed, what patient needs is to fight against the fatigue syndromes. For aiding in this, experts suggest some light exercises like short walks, may be 2 to 4 times a week.

oCoping with finances: This can be quite tricky for people who have to go through huge mesothelioma treatment. For a third man, the financial woes of mesothelioma patient may not be visible. The employer who exposed the person to asbestos is the one to be blamed. And therefore, experts suggest these patients to seek legal help from online mesothelioma lawyers in order to fight for justice. The compensations received in case of mesothelioma are huge and can suffice for the family to go through all the necessary treatment options, however expensive they may be.

The whole world is fighting to curb the mesothelioma menace by implementing the needed precautionary measures like using well fitting masks and maintaining low asbestos levels in the working environment. Some stringent measures by some governments have made it possible to reduce the incidence by some percentage in some countries. But still wide efforts are needed for widespread awareness about the mesothelioma!

The Basics of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Approximately 20 percent of cancers caused by asbestos are peritoneal mesothelioma. This form of the cancer manifests itself in the mesothelial cells of the abdomen when the asbestos fibers become embedded in the space between the cells. It can take as many as 20 to 50 years for the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma to appear. Over these years, the asbestos fibers irritate the parietal layer that covers the stomach cavity and they begin to produce cancer cells. Fluid builds up and tumors eventually form.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are swelling and pain in the abdomen, diarrhea or constipation, unexplained weight loss, nausea and vomiting, and the appearance of lumps under the skin in the abdominal area.

How is It Treated?

Since this type of cancer is usually diagnosed very late in its development, a positive mesothelioma prognosis is not likely, and treatment options are limited. Chemotherapy and radiation are typically used to threat the cancer, along with medication to provide pain relief. For many patients, surgery is not an option because at the point of discovery, this form of asbestos cancer has already spread too far and the patient's poor health may make him or her too weak to recover from the trauma of surgery.

How Does Exposure to Asbestos Cause Peritoneal Mesothelioma?

It is believed that there are two ways that asbestos can get into your system.

1. They can be ingested and then and consequently move through the digestive system into the peritoneal lining.
2. Asbestos fibers can be inhaled and travel to the peritoneal lining through the fluids in the lymphatic system.

Once these fibers get into the system, they become trapped and the body has no way to drive them out.

How Does Someone Get Exposed to Asbestos?

There is no test or conclusive way to find out if you have been exposed to asbestos. The only thing you can do is to review your life's history and current living conditions to know if you've ever been at risk for exposure to asbestos. Here are a few of the risk factors.

Living in an area where asbestos occurs naturally is one factor. Small particles of asbestos can get airborne, making it easy for you to inhale them. You can contact the health department where you live to find out if asbestos is in the local environment.
There used to be many industries that used asbestos regularly. If you ever worked in such a facility, you could have been exposed to it. It is also possible that you may have carried the asbestos fibers home to your family.
Before 1978, a lot of electrical wiring was insulated with asbestos. Asbestos was also woven into clothes and gloves that were worn by those regularly exposed to heat and fire.
Buildings and homes built before 1978 were frequently constructed using material with asbestos in them. Since asbestos is a good insulator, it was often used in floor and ceiling tiles, along with shingles and roofing paper. If any of these things were ever damaged, asbestos fibers could have become airborne.

Understand Mesothelioma Symptoms

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that occurs in individuals that have been exposed to high levels of asbestos. In the initial stage tumors will develop in the mesothelium, or lining around the lung, and will then spread outwards to infect other parts of the body. It can become a terminal disease that is difficult to treat. It is essential that mesothelioma symptoms are spotted at an early stage so that treatment can at least be attempted.

The hope for a cure is slim but there are techniques on offer that can improve the quality of life of mesothelioma sufferers. The following signs can often be taken to show the possible presence of this form of cancer -

1. Blood in mouth: Anytime that you cough up blood you should immediately contact your GP as it can be the sign of a serious medical condition such as mesothelioma. If the cancer is present then you may also experience difficulty swallowing your food.

2. Weight loss: Individuals that suffer from mesothelioma will be affected by a degree of weight loss. If you are shedding pounds and yet your diet and exercise regime stay the same then you should book an appointment with a doctor.

3. Pleural Effusion: The fine asbestos dust causes damage and irritation to the lining of the lungs. A common symptom is Pleural Effusion in which there is a painful build up of fluid within the lungs. This may show itself as a severe pain in the chest or problems associated with breathing.

4. Lumps: If you have mesothelioma then there is every chance that you will develop lumps or growths on your torso, specifically around the chest or abdomen areas. When you take a shower it is important to check for any abnormal lumps on your body.

5. Cough: When suffering from this form of cancer there is often a dry cough present. This does not produce and mucus or phlegm as is the case with a typical winter cold or influenza.

6. Aches: If the cancer spreads to other organs in your body that you are likely to experience widespread aches and throbbing sensations.

7. Bowel: If you have mesothelioma it can easily affect the stomach and bowel. If you have been experiencing alternate bouts of constipation and diarrhea then you have one of the signs of the disease. But be aware that bowel problems may be due to various conditions.

The instant that you feel you may be experiencing any number of the symptoms of mesothelioma you should seek medical guidance. Most cancers can now be spotted easily with the latest advancements in health technology.

Mesothelioma Threat From Nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes, a new material used in drugs, electronics, and energy-efficient batteries, may increase the risk for workers who use them of developing mesothelioma. Carbon nanotubes are either short and curly, or long and thin. Long, thin carbon nanotubes are similar to microscopic asbestos fibers in shape and size. A recently published study found that carbon nanotubes behave like asbestos fibers inside the body, and have the same potential for causing mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a slow-growing cancer of the mesothelium, the tissue lining the lungs and also the abdominal organs and the abdomen itself. By the time mesothelioma is diagnosed, it is so far advanced that it is invariably fatal. Life expectancy after diagnosis can be a matter of months, sometimes a few years. There are treatments for symptoms of mesothelioma, but there is no known cure.

A half century of medical research has established that the principal cause of mesothelioma is inhalation of microscopic asbestos fibers. The fibers are so dangerous because they are thin enough to be inhaled easily, and once inhaled, they lodge in the lung tissues. The body has mechanisms for clearing foreign particles from the lungs, but because of their length, asbestos fibers are not easy cleared, and can stay for decades, causing changes at the cellular level that lead to mesothelioma.

Carbon nanotubes are very light in weight, yet extremely strong. Because of these properties they are increasingly used in many high-tech applications. Yet for more than a decade, concern has been growing among nanotechnology researchers about the health effects of working with nanotubes, especially the consequences of inhaling them.

In the study recently published in Nature Nanotechnology, researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the effects of long and short asbestos fibers, long and short nanotubes and carbon black on mice. The materials were injected into the mice's abdominal cavity, where mesothelioma also develops; findings from the abdominal procedure can anticipate the effect in the lungs. The mice's response to long carbon nanotubes was the same as their response to long asbestos fibers; with both materials, the mice showed pathological changes in their tissue that are predictive of mesothelioma.

The study's authors called for more research into the environmental and health and safety risks posed nanotubes. It's not clear how much risk of inhalation is posed by current manufacturing processes, and whether these nanotubes, once inhaled, will embed themselves in lung tissue. Manufacturers need to know whether their processes allow nanotubes to become airborne, and if so, what safety equipment is required to protect workers from inhalation. Disposal of materials containing long fiber carbon nanotubes raises similar safety questions.

The principal funders of safety research in the US are government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA. Neither is currently funding studies of carbon nanotube safety.

The study looked only at the diameter and length of carbon nanotube fibers. Many other questions remain about nanotubes in which other elements have combined with the carbon, and the effects on human health of these compounds.

Nanotube technology and manufacturing is still in its infancy, and the pressure to use these versatile materials will be tremendous. This is the time to determine what the health and environmental implications of these materials are, and to put in place the necessary safeguards. If this is not done, another generation of American workers will face the prospect of a fatal and preventable cancer.

Mesothelioma Victims

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Mesothelioma victims suffer from this rare cancer which is also known as asbestos disease because it is usually caused by exposure to asbestos, either directly or indirectly.

The disease is difficult to diagnose because all of the obvious symptoms can be caused by other less serious medical problems. There are screening methods which can help but no generally accepted screening approach yet. Most mesothelioma victims die within about a year and a half of knowing they have the disease, not because it progresses rapidly but because the disease is often only diagnosed in the late stages.

It is a disease which most commonly affects the lining of the lungs. Symptoms can develop several decades after the exposure to asbestos and the exposure can be indirect such as when washing the clothes of someone working with asbestos. Another complicating factor is that the amount of exposure to asbestos does not correlate well with the likelihood of becoming a victim of the disease.

Treatment usually prolongs the life of someone with mesothelioma. Combination treatments which often consist of radical surgery followed by both chemotherapy and radiation treatment have shown better results than any one treatment alone.

For all the above reasons, it is important for anyone who might be suffering from the disease to find the very best specialist they can, for diagnosis and treatment. The treatment can be expensive, sometimes totaling around a million dollars.

Most victims apply for compensation for the disease, and the claims can be considerable, sometimes exceeding tens of millions of dollars. For this reason there are specialist legal practitioners in countries where the disease is most common, including USA, UK, Canada ad Australia.

Mesothelioma victims can now get support from a number of sources including information and support groups online, cancer centers and specialists.

Mesothelioma and Homeopathy

Mesothelioma is a dreaded lung cancer caused due to asbestos exposure. Though the symptoms of lung cancer do not occur immediately, the person may develop cancer after may be a few decades. It is the malignancy affecting serous membranes of the body. Though the prime site of affection is lung, other sites like abdominal peritoneum or pericardium may also be affected.

Though the cancer is very rare, the symptoms and signs leave patients restless and in agony. No definitive cure has yet been found by medical experts. In the earlier stages, surgery in the form of resection is helpful but chances of recurrence are high. In later stages, chemotherapy and radiation are carried out. But nowadays doctors emphasize on undergoing clinical trials for patients of Mesothelioma because numerous trials are being carried out in reputed cancer institutes. However the results are uncertain and the process may be excessively expensive.

Considering all the options, many doctors nowadays suggest the alternative therapies like Homeopathy for the dread called Mesothelioma. The homeopaths all over the world are contemplating various possibilities for the treatment of Mesothelioma. Though they do not boast to cure Mesothelioma totally, they do have very good results in terms of alleviation of symptoms of Mesothelioma. The excessive cough, chest pain, and constitutional symptoms like malaise, fever or weakness can be effectively dealt with by different Homeopathic remedies.

One of the definitive treatments in Homeopathy for Mesothelioma is mistletoe therapy. It is an immuno-augmentative therapy in which an herb called Iscador is extracted from mistletoe and administered to the patient in the form of injections or tablets. As the name suggests, the therapy aims at boosting the suppressed immune system and thus giving relief to the troubled patient.

Navy Mesothelioma - A Vocational Hazard

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you come across the term "Navy Mesothelioma"? Mesothelioma is a tumor that is caused due to extensive exposure to asbestos. Since such extensive exposure to asbestos is common with people who are working with asbestos, it is common to see people with mesothelioma in workers like electricians, insulators, fireproofing, roofing, plumbing, etc. Also, asbestos was used extensively in defense applications making defense personnel vulnerable to the condition. So, navy mesothelioma has become a term coined to indicate the high incidence of mesothelioma among navy personnel.

Asbestos, due to its sturdy nature and its fire resistant properties was regularly and heavily used in ships and in shipyards making navy personnel get a high exposure to asbestos. The poor ventilation in ships added to the increased contribution to causing a high incidence of mesothelioma among navy personnel and in close members of their families.

Mesothelioma is a highly debilitating and deadly disease that occurs a long time after asbestos exposure. It takes about almost 20 years or so for the symptoms to occur initially and might take a few more decades to become fully blown. By the time the symptoms progress and the disease can be diagnosed, there is usually not much that can be done to prevent further progress of the condition and will eventually lead to death.

Navy mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose as the condition. The exposure to asbestos is one thing in the previous history that will usually help point in the right direction. Navy mesothelioma is often diagnosed using the present signs and symptoms that are seen and with observing the CT scan findings.

The treatment options for mesothelioma is often limited and is also dependent on the extent of the condition, the age of the person and his general health condition. Radiation therapy is a treatment option wherein high energy radiation (x-rays) are used to try and regress the tumor and kill the cancerous cells. Another treatment option is to give chemotherapy wherein a drug combination is used to treat the navy mesothelioma and to prevent further spread of the condition.

People suffering from mesothelioma are also resorting to taking legal action by suing companies that have been manufacturing asbestos and resorting to their use without warning the public about the hazards of its use. But, people with navy mesothelioma are in a fix as they have limited abilities to seek legal action. However, they too are now getting legal help and getting benefits that will help them in getting proper treatment for this debilitating condition that has no total cure.

Mesothelioma Vs Lung Cancer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Cancer is the malignant growth of cells in the human body. It comes in many forms and each seems to have its own method of causing havoc. Given the variety of cancers, it is hardly surprising that some are inadvertently mixed up when discussed. This is often the case with Mesothelioma and lung cancer.

The first thing to understand is neither Mesothelioma nor lung cancer is ever a diagnosis you want to have. They represent two of the more difficult forms of cancer to treat. That being said, it is often assumed that one is the other and vice versa. This is often due to the fact that Mesothelioma is associated with the inhalation of asbestos which obviously incorporates the lungs. In truth, the two are unique and different. Let's take a look.

As the name suggests, lung cancer is the growth of mutated cells in the lungs. Unfortunately, it is one of the most common form of cancers, most often linked to smoking and the generally polluted environment we live in. There are different types of lung cancer. While they may spread beyond the lungs, all originate there.

Mesothelioma is not only a brutal form of cancer, it is difficult to pronounce. The name comes from the part of the body effected, the mesothelium. This is a thin lining found throughout the abdomen and chest area. The lining surrounds the major organs and acts as a protective layer. It is actually comprised of two layers with a lubricant found between them. This gives the encased organs the ability to move without being damaged by friction. Examples of such movement would include the heart beating or lungs expanding and contracting.

Mesothelioma is the cancerous growth of cells in this lining. It does not matter where the lining is located. The cancer can be in the lining around the heart, the lungs, the colon or anywhere in the general chest cavity. Mesothelioma does not originate in the lungs per se, but often is found in the mesothelium surrounding the lungs. It can then transition into the lungs.

In summary, Mesothelioma and lung cancer are two distinct forms of abnormal cell growth in the body. They can both impact the lungs, but only lung cancer actually originates in them.

Mesothelioma Lawyers Ask

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What is the Government doing about mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is one of the biggest killers in the UK, and statistics are set to peak over the next 10 to 15 years as the disease has a long incubation period. Swept under the carpet for years, the problem of the 'Silent Killer' (as the disease has become known) has recently received much higher public exposure with the successful conclusion of a court case centred on which insurance policy providers were liable to pay out in the event of a victim developing the disease - the insurers covering the company at the time of exposure or the insurers involved at the time of diagnosis.

The 'trigger case' lasted for nine weeks in 2008, and was regarded by specialist lawyers (solicitors) representing the families of mesothelioma victims as a landmark in how the courts would regard claims brought against former employers for injuries or illness as a direct result of exposure to asbestos.

The profile for this preventable industrial disease has been raised further by the decision to make February 27th 2008 as Action Mesothelioma Day. The day was marked by events throughout the UK with the purpose of raising awareness in the media and with the public of the disease. An international conference discussed advances in the treatment of mesothelioma. John Edwards, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and chair of the British Mesothelioma Interest Group, who addressed the conference said: "Researchers are desperate for funds to develop life saving treatments. Mesothelioma is far and away the least researched of the top twenty cancers in the UK. Funding for a UK National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases is a priority. Such a virtual institution would encourage collaboration and stimulate research to generate future treatments to prolong and save lives."

The Government has recognized that the ongoing problem of mesothelioma is one that has not subsided over time. Although the use of asbestos as a building material has been banned for over 20 years, there are still thousands of public buildings - in particular schools - that still have asbestos as part of their main structures. Although the asbestos has been coated with a protective layer of silicon to prevent dust escaping into the atmosphere, any damage to this layer could result in deadly dust being released. Those involved in the ongoing battle against the disease also fear that plumbers, electricians and other maintenance workers are at risk from exposure as they work on older properties that still contain asbestos.

Unite and other trade unions, health professionals, mesothelioma patients' asbestos support groups and Michael Clapham MP, chair All Party Asbestos sub committee, are leading the proposal for the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases. The development group has wide support and has met the Prime Minister's special advisor on health in Downing Street, the national director for cancer and the minister for health with responsibility for cancer.

The meeting was seen as a step forward by all parties indicating that the government takes the problem of mesothelioma seriously. The campaign is calling on the government to provide funding for a National Centre for Asbestos Related Disease to keep the UK in line with other western countries. The Australian government has already provided $6.2 million to fund a National Centre for Asbestos Related Disease. British sufferers and support groups are asking the government to match this funding, around £5 to 10 million, to provide a similar centre in the UK.

As the profile of this industrial disease is raised, the hope amongst specialist solicitors representing families of the victims of mesothelioma is that the long battle for compensation that many families face will become easier, ensuring that victims receive the compensation they deserve.

Treatment Options For Mesothelioma

After thousands of years of documentation pointing out the link between asbestos exposure and health issues, such as lung disease, the United States finally banned most forms of asbestos starting in 1988. However, because asbestos-related diseases may take years to manifest, they are still showing up 20 years later. Mesothelioma is one such problem.

Mesothelioma is a specific type of cancer caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos. It was first recognized in a South African chest and infectious disease hospital near an asbestos mine in the mid-1950s. While tuberculosis responded to treatment, doctors realized that there existed another lung disease out there that was not cured by tuberculosis treatment.

Finally, Chris Wagner, a medical researcher, began to study the unknown disease. He and two other researchers figured out the link between mesothelioma and asbestos. In 1959, they presented their findings at an international conference, and they submitted their article to a British medical journal. They reported that in 33 of the mesothelioma cases they studied, 32 of them were definitively linked to asbestos exposure.

This material becomes dangerous when it breaks off into microscopic shards that can be inhaled or ingested. Thus, it can easily cause mesothelioma, a particular type of cancer that attacks the lining of the abdominal cavity as well as the individual liners of our bodies' organs. Due to its close contact with such important parts of our bodies, mesothelioma can be very deadly.

Thankfully, though, further research into this disease has given us more options for treatment. Mostly, the method of treatment that a doctor will recommend depends on several things, including:

Type of mesothelioma
Tumor size and location
Degree/stage of the cancer
Age and physical health of the patient

Once doctors figure out the above information, they may outline a treatment plan based on the following:

Surgery - this option is exercised to either cure the cancer or make the patient more comfortable. Thus, it is often used very early in mesothelioma or very late.

Chemotherapy - this is not a cure for the cancer, but it can help stop the spread of the tumors. It can help provide relief from the painful symptoms associated with mesothelioma.

Radiation - radiative treatment is often exercised as an alternative to chemotherapy. It is better for more fragile people because it has less harsh side effects than chemo.

Clinical trials - up-and-coming treatment options can be tried in clinical trials. They are experimental and not yet approved by the FDA, so you must choose for yourself if it is worth the risk.

Alternative therapy - if you do not want to pursue a traditional treatment, you can try things like massage, acupuncture, or hypnosis, as well as a special diet or supplements to help you.

Treatment for mesothelioma can be costly. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with this terrible disease, you should speak to an attorney today about possible financial compensation from the liable party. Asbestos, Asbestos Exposure, and Mesothelioma - An Overview

Asbestos
The literal meaning of the word "asbestos" comes from the Greek, and it means "inextinguishable." Rightfully named, this long fibrous mineral has been widely used for thousands of years because of its fireproof qualities. In fact, the ancient Greeks used asbestos for the funeral dress of kings that were to be cremated. Both the Greeks and Romans used asbestos-fiber napkins, which they would clean by throwing into the fire.

In modern times, asbestos has been used for much the same reason. In addition, the mineral is highly resistant to heat, salt water, chemical corrosion and other biological processes. It is lightweight, extremely strong, and can be woven into cloth or mixed with building materials such as concrete. Asbestos has been used for insulation purposes in a variety of items and structures, including ceilings, walls, toasters, and hairdryers. It was widely used on ships and in military applications, and at one point its use was even mandated by the U.S. military.

Unfortunately, it is now known that exposure to asbestos carries with it enormous health risks. Pleural plaques, asbestosis, and mesothelioma cancer are some of the diseases that can be caused by asbestos, especially when the exposure is prolonged and/or repeated. Although the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder observed a "sickness of the lungs" in the slaves who worked with the fiber, and the first case of asbestosis was noted as far back as the 1920s in England, the material was used in industrial applications, and its adverse effects have been ignored or even deliberately covered up, for decades.

Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos, once disturbed, releases tiny particles which are typically unseen by the human eye into the air. Once inhaled, these particles become lodged in the mesothelium, which is the outer lining protecting the heart, lungs and stomach. The fibers cannot be breathed out or otherwise removed from the body once they are lodged in the body's soft tissues.

Exposure to dangerous asbestos fibers has caused the development of asbestos cancer in a variety of different employees and occupations over the years. Exposure has occurred through the mining of asbestos from the earth, construction or demolition of asbestos-containing building materials, and even by washing clothing that has been contaminated by asbestos. Various asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma, have been diagnosed in people from all walks of life.

Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer whose only known cause is asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma often has a long latency period, and can remain undiagnosed for years or even decades. By the time it is diagnosed, the cancer has usually reached an advanced stage, which makes determining how to undergo mesothelioma treatment very difficult. This means that we do not yet understand the full impact of the widespread usage of asbestos in the early decades of the 20th Century, since so many people are just now being diagnosed.

Mesothelioma symptoms are generally non-specific and resemble those of common sicknesses, such as viral pneumonia, heart disease, flu and bronchitis. These symptoms include dyspnea (shortness of breath) or difficulty breathing, coughing and/or coughing up of blood, chest or abdominal pain caused by excessive fluid, weight loss, husky voice, difficulty swallowing, fever, anemia, bowel obstruction, inability to sleep, and loss of appetite. Because of the resemblance to many other diseases, mesothelioma is often misdiagnosed, or not accurately diagnosed until it has reached advanced stages. As with all cancers, mesothelioma can be more effectively treated when it is diagnosed early, but due to its long latency period and its symptoms' similarities to other health issues, it rarely is.

Currently, mesothelioma is incurable. There are treatments which can be used to slow the disease's progress or provide palliative care. Established therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation, experimental treatments, and holistic therapies can all be used individually or in conjunction with one another.
